Interview with Laurent Tomas

Digital transformation expert at Percall Group

In today’s fast-changing industrial environment, accelerating design and production is no longer optional : it’s a strategic necessity.

Hello Laurent, shortening design and production timelines has become a major challenge for many industrial players.
Why is this acceleration so strategic today?

“In advanced industries, it’s a necessity. The world is changing fast: new regulations, geopolitical instability, supply chain disruptions… We must be able to adapt quickly while ensuring performance, traceability, reliability, and safety. Reducing time-to-market also means responding more effectively to operational needs. Accelerating theproduct development plan with a faster engineering and manufacturing enables strategic technologies to emerge more quickly and strengthen our industrial sovereignty.”

And concretely what solutions help achieve this?

“Digital transformation plays a key role. Transform the current business methods & processes supported by digital tools like PLM, MES, ERP allows us to co-design and build new products everywhere, anytime, as concurrent engineering. The digital continuity will allow to implement digital twins, product & process simulations and optimizations, to anticipate non-conformities and machine maintenance, reduce production risks, to maximize the chances of getting it right the first time, and to monitor all in the production in real time.”

Is anticipation essential to shortening timelines?

“Absolutely. Anticipation during the design phase is a major lever to improve product quality and to secure production planning. The earlier industrial constraints are integrated, the fewer surprises downstream. The entire value chain benefits from greater fluidity and reliability. Design the product with production in mind, while defining manufacturing process plans before production starts, speeds time-to-industrialization, helps avoid costly rework, ensures smooth workflows, and facilitates manufacturing. But it also gives innovation a head start, bringing it to market faster, which is strategically critical.”
